JEFFERSON CITY – Clients still visit salons in mid-Missouri, but they’re waiting longer between appointments.
Salon services are things you may not think about it much until the color of your roots doesn’t match the rest or your hair gets a bit long or unruly.
“I woke up this morning and thought, eh, I need a haircut desperately,” Janice Leivain said.
She came in to Fantastic Sams on Monday because the haircut is convenient and affordable. Hair services can cost as little as seven dollars for a simple cut to around $100 or more for certain color services depending on the salon and stylist. In this economy, stylists aren’t the only ones making cuts. Salons are seeing many of the same things among clients.
“A lot of my big families aren’t coming out as much” salon owner Tracy Dunstan said.
“They are waiting longer to get their highlights done,” stylist Rachel Stone said.
“They may be going a few weeks in-between those particular services, but they are receiving them,” salon owner Catherine Crum said.
“I think people have been waiting longer,” stylist Jeanne Luadzers said.
At many salons there’s more time between visits, but higher priced salons say they’re actually seeing the same number of clients or more.
“We’re not sure where they’re coming from, but they are coming in to the salon,” Crum said.
And while some managers say there’s been a little bit of a setback at lower priced salons, more new people are coming in.
“I’ve noticed we’ve had a lot more newer customers, maybe because our prices are lower” Luadzers said.
The lower prices mean some clients may switch to salons where they can pay around $20 for a haircut instead of $30 to $40.
“You know a lot of people don’t want to spend more money which they had been and they could afford it then, but now people are really watching their dollars.” salon manager Selena Fulcher said.
While many mid-Missourians are watching their money more, Leivian says cutting back on driving and eating out isn’t quite the same as hair services.
“I have to have my hair done. I cannot cut my own hair, and I wouldn’t even step out of the house if I tried.” Leivian said.
Salon owners and managers also say that they haven’t raised their prices in an effort to keep services more affordable when people need to make cuts to save money.
